IC Information:
Name: Preincarnation: Finland / Timo Väinämöinen
Reincarnation: Åsa Oxenstierna
Canon and medium: Axis Powers Hetalia (Webcomic, manga and anime)
Age: Preincarnation: About 1000 years old, appears to be around 20.
Reincarnation 26, 27 on December 6th
Preincarnation Species: Nation
Preincarnation Appearance: Finland is a bit on the short side, at 170cm, with round features. He has a cheerful, feminine face, which is dominated by his big, purple eyes. His hair is a light blonde, and it’s fairly long, falling to about his ears. He’s fairly curvy for a guy, but he also tends towards a chubbier body type in peacetime. Clothes wise, in modern times he errs towards what would probably be classed as an old man style, big woollen jumpers and knitted vests with shirts and neat trousers.
Any differences: > Like Finland, Åsa is short (155-160cm) and closer to the chubby side of a normal weight. Her hair is the same light blonde, cropped to around her ears in a very similar style to her male counter part, and she has the same feminine face shape and big eyes. Hers are a more normal light blue, though. She carries most of her weight on her hips and thighs; she’d be quick to point out that her boobs are probably smaller than average for her size, but she has a small waist so it’s easy to hide that. She tends to emphasise her waist but sticks with pastel colours and otherwise loose fitting clothes, similar to the Mori-girl style.
While Finland has a female version in canon, it’s literally just an appearance and has no canon personality. I’m therefore apping the canon male reincarnated as a female. It allows me to explore another side of being a Nation, given that most Nations are traditionally portrayed as female and are meant to represent all of their people, not just the male 50%. Having the male Finland reborn as a woman gives him the chance to explore that.

Preincarnated History: Given the nature of Hetalia, this contains things that aren’t confirmed by canon, but are confirmed by history. Rather than putting them in italics I’ve put them in small text.
Finland in Hetalia
Finland in history from around the point when I think he was born
Finland’s early history is shrouded, like a lot of Nations. His first firm memories are of Sweden, and he was taken under his control in the 12th century. Sweden brought Christianity to Finland, and in the 13th century they became part of the Kalmar Union along with the rest of the Nordics.
For a short while there was relative peace, but Sweden and Denmark began to fight in the 14th century, and when Sweden left in 1523 Finland accompanied him, and they lived together for a long time after that. Sweden decided that Finland was his wife, and despite his protests to the contrary, Sweden adjusted his clothes to fit Finland, took partial control of Latvia and Estonia for Finland’s sake, and they adopted a dog together, who they named Floweregg (thanks to Finland’s naming sense). During the Polish-Swedish wars, Finland fought along side Sweden and was disappointed when Sweden decided to retreat.
Finland and Sweden tried to make a ‘holiday home’ in America when the continent was first colonised, and Finland was in fact the first one to spot the new Nation who would become the USA. Finland was worried for the boy even though he never actually got close to him. In fact, when Holland took the land from him, he was more concerned for the boy than for the loss of the land, accidentally letting France and England know about him, leading to the other two Europeans finding and eventually laying claim to America (fortunately for them, Finland failed to notice the similarities between himself and the boy).
In 1809 Finland left Sweden for the first time in 600 years to become a Grand Duchy under the Russian Empire. During the 100 or so years that he was with Russia, Finnish language and Finnish culture grew, with the publication of the Kalevala in 1835. Finland declared independence on December 6th 1917 following the Russian revolution, declaring that without the monarchy the treaty that tied Finland to Russia was void. Only a few months later a brief civil war broke out, which ended with Finland becoming a presidential republic.
He was neutral during WWI, but during WWII Russia turned his eyes towards him, having reclaimed the Baltic nations. As a new independent country, Finland worked hard to defend himself, though. Of all the European countries fighting, only Finland, England and Russia never had their capitals occupied. Sweden helped as much as he could while maintaining his neutrality, taking Finland’s children and keeping them safe and providing him with what weapons and soldiers he could unofficially.
After WWII Finland was classed as a belligerent nation, and heavy war fines were imposed on him. However, unlike many, he was able to repay these years in advance, and he’s thrived in the modern age. Things are comfortable for him, and his home is generally regarded as a good place to live. He gets on well with Sweden and the rest of his family, and it's implied that he helps to look after Sealand and Ladonia at least part of the time, and Finland has been acting as Santa Claus for at least the last few years.
Reincarnated History: Åsa is the youngest child of five. Born in a smaller town on the outskirts of a southern Swedish city, her parents worked hard to provide for their family, but their jobs didn’t quite stretch to five children. Despite that, her childhood was a happy one. She learnt to make her own enjoyment, and with so many siblings it wasn’t hard. While she does have a sister, she’s the oldest of the family and ten years older than Åsa, so she gets on better with the two youngest brothers of her family. When they were younger they’d play together and she got used to a bit of rough and tumble, never that girly for all that she loves cute things, and not afraid to stand up for herself in a fight.
She was always average at school, good at art and history but bad at maths and science. However, she was popular with both students and teachers, involved in more than a few socials and clubs. As she grew older she took a more active role in a few, best known for running secret santas at Christmas, something which she continued at university. After a gap year that she spent working in a local coffee shop and travelling she went to university to study design. Unsurprisingly she excelled, academically as well as socially this time with her degree narrowed down to her interests and skills. It was a good time for her, surrounded by friends but still close enough to visit home when she missed her family. By her second year she had a part time job at the university, selling her degree to prospective new students, and through fourth and fifth year she used this position to make connections within her industry.
Thanks to that she came straight out of university into a job in a tiny website design company in the same town as her university. At first she was happy there, but her friends began to disperse as they too got jobs, and it wasn’t what she’d gone into design to do. She began to apply for other jobs, mainly within Scandinavia, but also further abroad.
It was one of these that landed on the desk of a man she’d looked after when he had visited her university as a guest speaker. Remembering the cheerful young woman, he was quick to find her a place, and give her an offer she hadn’t expected: they’d pay for her to relocate to Locke city, and help her with visas, all of the paperwork. It was an opportunity she knew she wouldn’t get twice, and though the position was lower than the job she had at the time, the company was much larger and there was more chance for promotion, and more importantly she’d be working on interior design, something she’d always loved.
But it was still a hard decision to leave her home country, family and friends, and she didn’t take it lightly. It took her a month to come to her decision, and when she did decide to go for it she was left with precious little time to make arrangements. It turned out to be a whirlwind of a move, leaving her a little lost. Because of that and the newness of the cultural shift it took her much longer to settle down than it had at uni, and her first Christmas in America was her darkest and loneliness moment in all of her years. Fortunately after that she started to find her feet and settle down, making new friends and starting to enjoy work again.
First Echo: Åsa’s first echo was a partial memory of this strip. While on a walk with some coworkers in the park she noticed a young boy without any shoes on. Realising he was alone, she went to him and while he was initially timid she helped him find his shoes which he’d drenched in the pond and then his mother. Her coworkers teased her for it, but they also questioned why she didn’t have children of her own yet, and she pointed out that if she was going to have children she’d be more likely to have them at home in Sweden than in America.
It was a couple of nights later that she dreamt the real memory of what happened in her past (just the first strip) but it took her until about lunch time until she realised that her dream wasn’t just a revisit to what had happened earlier on in the week.
Preincarnation Personality: Outwardly, Finland is always smiling, happy, bubbly and very, very talkative. He likes to keep the atmosphere light by making jokes or keeping up the conversation, but around people that unnerve him like Sweden he talks even more. There isn’t much of a filter between his brain and his mouth, though, so sometimes he comes out with things that might make him seem a little silly, and if he does he’ll light up like a candle, blushing darkly. This makes him pretty easily flustered, especially when he’s anxious or nervous, and he’s fidgety too, although that can also be put down to the amount of coffee that he consumes. He’s generous and sweet, and keeps a large group of friends close to his heart, happiest when the people close to him are happy and well. He’s very aware of his feminine features, and finds it uncomfortable when people bring them up or when Sweden uses ‘wife’ to refer to him. While he’s generally comfortable with himself, he’s aware of the curve of his hips and his fair features and doesn’t like to have attention paid to them or to pay attention to them..
However, like all Nations, Finland has endured all kind of hardships in his long history. Of all of the Nordics, he’s said to have had the hardest life. For five hundred years, more or less, he was Sweden’s underling, and for another hundred after that he was Russia’s, so from a modern canon point he’s only been independent for just over a hundred years. It’s also rather telling that Finnish only became a national language equal to Swedish in 1863. So while he is very cheerful, he’s not child-like, and he can be serious if the situation calls for it. He’s mature beyond his apparent age (which isn’t surprising, given that there’s a thousand years between his apparent age and physical one, but he’s noted as mature where other, older, Nations aren’t and that is). All of these hardships have led him to be a hard worker, and he will work without complaint. He’s an excellent housekeeper, having been Sweden’s ‘wife’ for so long. Unfortunately he has a tendency to take tasks a little bit too seriously, such as the costume that he makes for Halloween 2011, where he goes very overboard in making a ghost pirate outfit, skull mask included. He also worries a lot for his friends, putting their well being before his own. The other side affect of being an underling for so long is that his sense of self worth isn’t what it should be, and he will put himself beneath others. He’s much better at this than he was when he was owned by other Nations, but between this and his need to look after others he’ll still put other people’s interests before his own. This applies only to his personal well being and not his well being as a Nation: for example, he’d give the last of his food to one of his citizens but he wouldn’t back down in a fight at a world meeting when it concerned the welfare of his people.
His experiences with war, famine and hardship have left him with a rock solid core. Although he is very affable and can endure a lot, he does have a breaking point, and push him past that and he will bite, and hard. No one expected him to last as long as he did in the Winter War – Russian troops were told to be careful not to accidentally invade Sweden as they swept across the country, but he stood firm. One of the easiest ways to get him to snap is to threaten his friends and somewhat family in the Nordics and Estonia. He’s very loyal, and he values loyalty in other people as well. This leads to him worrying a lot about the people that he cares about.
Of all of his features, though, his most noticeable is his quirkiness. He’s a huge sucker for cute things, like moomins and baby America, but his naming sense is appalling. He was designated designer when the Nordics were given roles (with Sweden as the maker, Denmark as the seller and Norway as the critic) but you’d better hope that one of the other comes up with the names. This is a Nation who tried to name his dog ‘Bloody Floweregg’ after all. He’s also in love with weird festivals, the stranger the better, although he also adores Christmas and works hard to make sure that it’s a good time for all of his family. And never, ever let him cook. While he has all the technical abilities to make something wonderful, he has a habit of straying from the recipe, and adding something downright bizarre. If he offers you Salmiakki, don’t take it. He’s also a little too into his sports, especially if it comes with a chance to kick Sweden’s arse at ice hockey. Don’t sit close to him at a game.
Any differences: There are two big differences between Åsa and Finland; her gender and her mortality, and both have brought her up differently to her previous life.
Although she wasn’t spoilt as a child, she’s never lived through a famine or fought in a war. She’s had her own hardships, but she hasn’t suffered in the same way as Finland, and she’s always had her family close. So any hardships she does come across she doesn’t have the experience to deal with it, and while she’ll always try her best, she’ll give in a lot sooner than Finland would. She’s also more likely to cry when things go wrong, and if she has a bad day it’s always a struggle not to go home so she can curl up under the covers for a good cry (and maybe some vodka later). She’s more violent than Finland, having not learnt her own limits as well, or seen what the real affects can be. She’s not prone to random violence, but she does get angry at perceived injustice, and she’s not afraid to throw herself into a fight. This is partly to do with not having been an underling in the same way as he was, and also to do with the way she was raised with three older brothers close at hand.
Her mortality and the difference in their ages also mean that she’s much less confident than her previous self. For Finland, confidence was something that was earned over his history, particularly in the last hundred years since independence. For Åsa, she’s too young to have developed this confidence, and while she’s friendly and outgoing, she’ll still bow her head if you stare or glare at her, and she’s also nervous if she has to put forward ideas or suggestions. She’s starting to develop; moving to America helped her a lot, once she got over being so much out of her comfort zone, but she’s more like Finland when he was an underling than he was at the end of his canon. Like Finland, she suffers from low self-worth and will put others ahead of herself, but her low self-esteem comes more from her body issues than her personal circumstances.
Being born female makes her more confident in her femininity. While Finland denies any attempt to call him cute, Åsa considers it a compliment. Instead she’s more aware of her masculine traits, picked up from her brothers. Being called ‘cute’ makes her blush because she’ll assume they’re exaggerating, and should anyone call her beautiful she wouldn’t believe it. She has self esteem issues relating to her appearance; she’s too chubby, she doesn’t have enough curves, she doesn’t know how to apply makeup very well, her style isn’t fashionable enough, she’s too childish. They go on and on, emphasised by things like TV and magazines. She’s tried to grow her hair out before, only to decide that long hair looks even worse, like a girl in her mother’s clothes, and went back to the short, cropped style that she’s always had. At least she can settle for sort of cute, even if she wishes she could be tall and slim and elegant like the women in magazines.
Abilities: Like all Nations, Finland is long-lived and hard to kill. He recovers quickly from physical harm and ages based on his country’s development rather than his physical age. Likewise, his health is dependent on his economic status rather than his physical well being. Nations get cold when there's a recession on but can physically exert themselves without negative side affects.
Physically, he’s stronger than he looks, and stronger than a human would be. He’s also a very good shot, specialising with a sniper rifle, and complimenting this he has better than normal vision. Although all Nations must be good with languages, Finland has had to deal with more than most. He has two National languages, Finnish and Swedish, and over the years Russian, French and Latin have also been important languages in his Nation, as well as English more recently.
It's also important to note that he acts as Father Christmas more than once in canon. While there are Nations that have magical powers, Finland isn't normally classed with them and there's been nothing to suggest he can see Norway or England's fairy friends, so for the sake of needing some way to describe it for this app I'm going to say that the magic is in the sleigh rather than in Finland himself. This means that unless Åsa regains the sleigh (which I'm not going to do) she won't be able to use this ability, but she will be able to remember using it eventually.
